Life Challenges for Adults with Learning Disabilities

Life throws challenges in every phase of our life, and it varies from person to person. Disability shapes developmental trajectories of life satisfaction differently depending upon its age onset and affects the physical and social environment of the individual. There are many different patterns of learning disabilities; one person may have reading difficulties, while some may have problems with math numerals, or others may have difficulty with self-control. These difficulties prolong through the adult phase of life.

The personal sphere of life

Primary difficulties
Learning disorders affect that region of the brain which is related to perceiving, thinking, and remembering. It further causes problems in executing functions and language processing and affects memory and attention. Along with these chief issues, adults have struggles to follow directions, difficulty in adjusting themselves to changes, and hinder personal organization. These difficulties, individually or collectively, have a bearing on academic skills but also have an equal impact on all areas of adult functioning.

The feeling of being incompetent
Since individuals with learning difficulties need more time to perform a particular task, they fall behind their colleagues in educational and professional life. Academic skills to read, write and solve that were not mastered during the school-age years remain difficult in higher studies.
For adults having undiagnosed learning difficulties can affect career choice and limit job advancement, which further leads to psychological and emotional draining. The person interprets their educational failures as personal faults and experiences feelings of embarrassment. because of a perceived intellectual deficiency. Many of the adults struggle opening up about their difficulties to their family and peers.

The Social life

Attitudinal
The lack of familiarity and feelings of insecurity remains around learning disabilities. It slows down the socializing skills. Individuals may find themselves isolated and pushed away to the boundaries of society. Encountering discrimination and prejudice or an unfelt sympathetic approach damages the person's productive and inclusive lifestyle.

Stereotypes
A negative bias always exists toward persons with disabilities, which majorly happens due to the lack of awareness among the general population. The lack of understanding leads people to ignore and have misconceptions about such individuals. Forming false assumptions and ideas worsen the sufferer's social stand.

Inadequate self-concept
Social acceptance is pivotal in a child’s life, which may become harder to obtain if one has a learning disability. An overall feeling of lack of self-worth and low self-esteem are pervasive. The primary difficulties as discussed above are common in adults with learning disabilities, which may change in intensity from person to person. These problems are a constant source of frustration due to which individuals may struggle with social acceptance.

Learning disabilities are lifelong conditions. As people with these conditions already struggle with its symptoms, they also have to deal with societal misunderstandings and unawareness. Learning and thinking are very common, and finding support is the key to success.
